How much does it cost to tile a roof?

Whether you opt for slate, concrete or clay tiles, and whether they are interlocking or plain, you can expect to pay at least a few thousand pounds to tile a whole roof.

Tiling a whole roof is costly in terms of materials and labour. Generally speaking and weather permitting, it will take one to two weeks to tile a roof from start to finish. Labour is charged at an hourly rate. You can expect to pay around £50-£80 per hour for a good roofer.

In terms of materials, roofs can be broken down into a series of sections where the amount of tiles needed can be worked out per square metre. However tiles are not the only material needed. You also need a breathable membrane and battening, as well as nails and fixings and, depending on the roof, valley lead or a GRP (fibreglass) valley.

The largest cost for a roofing project however is the tiles. Plain tiles are very common, but the newer interlocking tiles actually work out cheaper overall. This is because interlocking tiles interlock at the sides, reducing the need for tiles to overlap. This means that far less tiles are needed to tile the roof. In addition to this, the fact that the interlocking tiles do not overlap at the sides means that a lot less battening is needed, and while this material is relatively cheap (about 30p per metre), the labour to fix it is very high.

To give you an example, for a roof that needs 10,500 plain tiles, the cost of the tiles alone would be roughly £4,700.00. That same roof would likely only need 1,900 interlocking tiles at a price of roughly £2,000.00. However, it’s important to remember that while interlocking tiles work out cheaper, they are not always the best solution and in some areas, such as in conservation areas, you may be required to install plain tiles to match other properties.

Whatever the case, the cost of tiling a roof comes down to materials and labour. You can save considerable amounts of money by choosing interlocking tiles and negotiating a going rate with your roofer, however the key consideration you should have when choosing a roofer should not be the cost but rather their competence in delivering the job.
